Looking back on 2024: the annual report of Flanders Arts Institute

What were the main themes for Flanders Arts Institute in 2024? What visitor programmes did we organise for international programmers? What places did we visit abroad? How many artists surfed to our website? Read all about it in our annual report.

You couldn’t miss it: in 2024, Flanders Arts Institute put everything into collecting input for the new Landscape Sketch of the Arts. That is a study that analyses the arts field in Flanders, as well as its themes. It monitors existing evolutions, identifies new trends and analyses strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Completion is scheduled for September 2025.

The Landscape Sketch of the Arts draws on what the arts sector itself signals. We shaped a trajectory as multi-voiced and broad as possible within the framework of the professional arts. The question of what exactly professional art is, was examined along with it.

We organised sector days and focused discussions by discipline, (sub)sector, function and topic. People joined via open calls and could also bring in additional topics along the same lines. We organised 53 events at 33 different locations all over Flanders and Brussels. More than 1,000 colleagues from the arts field shared their insights, accounting for 200 hours of audio recordings.

These were reworked into anonymous transcriptions and, together with our own knowledge, data and research, serve as the base for the publication. In the process, we received contributions from editing partners from other disciplines: the Flemish Audiovisual Fund, Literature Flanders, VI.BE and the Flemish Architecture Institute. In addition, the Department of Culture, Youth and Media organised a writing assignment on design.

Of course, the Landscape Sketch of the Arts wasn’t Flanders Arts Institute’s only focus in 2024. We delivered a series of new studies: on artists’ careers, public engagement today, the link between creativity and mental well-being, specific forms of organisational development, and more. We continued working on the repurposing of the collections of the former support centres (VTi, BAM, Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen), and organised a public talk on freedom of expression in the arts.

Moreover, further efforts were made on our successful writing tables, weekly meeting moments during Morning Coffees, several visitor programmes, working visits, sector meetings, daily press reviews, databases, and supporting our sector through initiatives such as the Supernova chamber music competition, fairs and so much more.
