Sector Meeting ISCM Flanders – instruments from the world
We know little about the fascinating worlds of the balafon, darbuka, erhu, kannel, kemenche, duduk, oud or sheng. They occasionally appear in calls for works by new music festivals, but they often don’t get much response. This is definitely not due to a lack of interest, but how does a composer approach such a challenging exploration? It’s about time we delve into those instruments.
During this sector meeting we go all out for sharing enthusiasm and expertise.

14u00 – keynote Olmo Cornelis.
Cornelis is a composer, musicologist, ethnomusicologist and musician. Fascinated as he is by music from Central Africa, these repertoires form the common thread in his activities. In his doctoral research at the Conservatory of Ghent, Cornelis studied how to use computational techniques in describing music without starting from Western musical concepts. The results offer new possibilities for composers and musicians when it comes to the use of timbres, scales, vocal and instrumental techniques, among others.

15u00 – conversation with London composer Bushra El-Turk
In her work Western and Eastern musical traditions merge and not infrequently socio-cultural issues are touched. In doing so, she does not lose sight of her own Lebanese roots. Commissioned by Concertgebouw Brugge, El-Turk wrote Vane (for taegŭm, kamāncha & accordion) for the Angel Room.

Those who wish can enjoy Bushra El-Turk’s music theatre performance Woman at Point Zero by LOD for free as a part of All Arias (a biennial festival for musical theatre from home and abroad) and the premiere of her work Vane for the Angel Room.
