Art and the world are inextricably linked. Art during crisis explores the role of art in times of crisis, such as war or persecution. During monthly, digital discussions, we pass the word to a voice from the arts field as a starting point.

Lawyer Alicia Denutte goes over what visas and other legal residence options are available in Belgium. Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky explain how they supported several refugee artists in cooperation with various international arts organisations.

8 May (1 May is a public holiday) – on (forced) mobility and visa with Alicia Denutte, Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky.
Alicia Denutte graduated with a master’s degree in law from Ghent University with a focus on human rights, immigration law and international criminal law. Since 2017, she has volunteered at the New York Legal Assistance Group where she translates French and Spanish documents into migration files. In 2021, Alicia obtained an LL.M. from Cornell Law School and passed the bar exam in New York. In the months following the bar exam, she worked as a human rights fellow for the organisation Water Protector Legal Collective (Indigenous Rights). Since September 2022, Alicia is part of Antigone Law Practice.
Ivor Stodolsky (curator, writer) and Marita Muukkonen (curator) are co-founders and directors of Perpetuum Mobile (PM), the international NGO which runs Artists at Risk (AR) and Ecologists at Risk (ER). Artists at Risk is a network/institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts. Artists at Risk (AR) / Ecologists at Risk (ER) relocated 850+ artists in cooperation with 300+ hosting institutions in the decade since its founding in 2013.
École de recherche graphique is the place for artistic, visual and graphic practices in Brussels that enter areas of theoretical and formal risk. Both the place and teaching seek to be collectively defined and redefined. It is a place where you learn what doesn’t work, a place for research.
Wendy Toussaint Liebermann is assistant director of école de recherche graphique. She studied political science and performing arts at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
Flavio Orzari is a performer, lighting designer, videomaker and art educator from Brazil, lives and works as an artist in Brussels, and teaches at école de recherche graphique, where he is also pedagogical coordinator. He studied both in Brasil (UNICAMP, FHO, UCB) and in Belgium (a.pass and école de recherche graphique).

Thursday 9 January – Inclusion and social connection in arts organisations with Kunsthal Gent & Josien Pieterse (Framer Framed)
Danielle van Zuijlen & Jana Vasiljević, Kunsthal Gent: Kunsthal Gent is an experimental intersection for the presentation and development of contemporary visual art. Danielle van Zuijlen (co-founder, development coordinator) and Jana Vasiljevic (platform coordinator) form the artistic team together with Valentijn Goethals (co-founder, presentation coordinator).
Josien Pieterse, Framer Framed: is co-founder and co-director of Framer Framed, a platform for contemporary art, visual culture and critical theory & practice in Amsterdam. Framer Framed aims to transform the art landscape into an inclusive and equitable playing field, where the voices of those who are less vocal are not only valued, but naturally participate.
Thursday 6 February – Importance of artist residencies in times of crisis with Hicham Khalidi, Piet Joostens & Caroline Dumalin
Hicham Khalidi: is the director of the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht (NL), a Post-Academy for art, design and reflection that offers residencies to international artists, designers, writers, curators and architects.
Piet Joostens: is is an author, translator and programme maker at International House of Literature Passa Porta in Brussels, where he is responsible for residencies and talent development. Passa Porta is a unique and multilingual meeting place for anyone curious about ideas, texts and stories.
Caroline Dumalin: is artistic director of MORPHO in Antwerp. MORPHO focuses on artistic development by offering residencies and studios to artists, giving them time, space and/or resources.
Robin Vanbesien is an artist, filmmaker, researcher, and educator, and has A PhD in the arts. Robin coaches in the Masterproject in a Socio-Political Context at Sint Lucas Antwerpen (KdG).
Stadscanvas is a project by Fameus for artistic newcomers to practise Dutch during artistic activities, and to form a community. Fameus is a creative space for amateur artists in Antwerp.
Ruth Razan Loos holds a master’s degree in fine arts and art sciences and a PhD in arts. She is a lecturer and policy officer in research and social work at Sint Lucas Antwerp (KdG) with a focus on diversity and inclusion and participatory practices.
