Belgian photography in the spotlight in Arles

07-08 Jul 2021
Network meeting Various locations, Arles
Meet the photographers from Belgium who will show their work in Arles this Summer.

Estelle Lecaille (independent curator at mòsso) and Simon Delobel (director of KIOSK) put Belgian photography in the spotlight in Arles this summer. With Naître aux mondes (Coming to Worlds) they set up a route of casual and informal encounters with photographers in the public space. Their proposal was selected after an open call.

Naître aux mondes offers a route of informal and fortuitous encounters in the public space with Belgian or Belgium-based photographers with autonomous artistic positions, singular individualities and diversified practices and genres: from portrait photography and self-portraits to documentary photography and photo collages.

The curators have chosen photographers who deserve recognition by the general public: Hélène AmouzouBrahim TallPatrick WokmeniMuhiba Botan, Rami HaraPrignot & Alvarez and Chrystel Mukeba.

At a time when current policies are geared towards xenophobia, the closing of borders and the withdrawal of identity, it seems fundamental to show the work of artists who propose another vision of our society: multicultural, cosmopolitan and rich in constantly renewed external contributions.

The photographic proposals were chosen for their ability to break down imaginary borders, to decompartmentalise our systems of thought and mental constructs linked to the other, allowing us to understand that we form a single living human community. Addressing the other through art remains a unique way of opening up to the possible and to others, and of rethinking our relationship to the world.
