Open Call: attend a photography master class with Ruth van Beek

Oproep
mentormentor

During a five-day masterclass, you will be challenged to strengthen your competences and to enhance your identity as a photographer. It can be the start of a new project or the continuation and completion of unfinished work from your archive. We will explore different story lines, perspectives and possibilities to tell your personal story in a way that it also appeals to others. We will dig deep to find your motivation, we will encourage you to experiment, to ignite your energy and to share our personal experiences and guide you in this process. We conclude the masterclass with an open atelier.

MSTRCLSS 09 – RUTH VAN BEEK – OPEN CALL

Ruth van Beek (1977, Zaandam NL) appeals to our collective memory by juxtaposing an archive of old formal imagery with her own creations. The familiar versus the abstract, the dead versus the living. The collection takes on its true meaning when it appears in book form. It is there, in the tension between what is hidden and what is repetitively shown, that as a viewer you resonate with the work and are moved to emotion.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in places including Italy, Tokyo, San Francisco and Arles and has appeared in renowned magazines. She has published numerous artist books, including ‘The Oldest Thing’ (publisher, 2024), ‘Eldorado’ (Van Zoetendaal Publishers, 2020) ‘How To Do The Flowers’ (APE & Dashwood Books, 2018) and ‘The Arrangement’ (RVB Books, 2013). Ruth van Beek is represented by The Ravestijn Gallery in Amsterdam.

PROGRAMME

On the first day of the master class, you will briefly introduce yourself and your work to Ruth van Beek and the group. The following days you will be working on the feedback you received. You can work at your own studio table and use the walls for experimenting. Throughout the week, you will reflect on themes that live in the group and there will be room for discussion, reflection, doubt and sharing of experiences. In one-on-one conversations with Ruth you can concentrate on personal questions you want to explore further. This allows you to dive deep into your work during five days. Both visually and in terms of content, you will explore how your work can further develop. The masterclass finishes with an informal open studio moment.
