Open call to create the Belgian pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale

Call
Departement Cultuur, Jeugd & Media

The Venice Biennale is one of the most important visual arts platforms in the world. It is an opportunity for Flanders to promote its significance within the international field of contemporary visual arts. For artists and curators, it is a unique opportunity to showcase themselves to virtually the entire art scene. Are you interested in acting as a curator for the Belgian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2026? Then submit your proposal before 2 December 2024.

Who can submit?

Curators who live and work in Flanders or the Brussels Capital Region, and are professionally connected to the art world within the Flemish Community, can submit a proposal. The curator should have experience as an exhibition maker and be able to manage complex projects, including practical implementation, planning and fundraising.

In the proposal, the curator collaborates with an artist or artists who are professionally connected to contemporary art in Flanders and have already completed an international trajectory. These artists are at a career stage where participation in the Biennial can further enhance their breakthrough.

How does the procedure work?

In the first stage, each candidate submits a conceptual proposal consisting of:

  • a substantive concept note of up to 2 pages, possibly accompanied by a visualisation of up to 2 pages and 2 images
  • a practical concept note with first ideas about the realisation, planning and budget of maximum 2 pages
  • the CVs of the curator(s) and artist(s)
  • the commitment of an institutional partner in Flanders to support the participation in the Biennial and to present an exhibition around the participation in the Biennial.

This proposal must be submitted by Monday 2 December 2024 at the latest. From these proposals, the jury will select up to three candidates who will proceed to the second stage. Interested parties should submit their proposal electronically via e-mail to kunsten@vlaanderen.be.
