Are you bumping into barriers as a start-up artist? Join our learning network Wortelen/Rooting

Call
Flanders Arts Institute

Are you an artist at the beginning of their career, looking for nurturing opportunities, support and enrichment of your artistic practice? Do you experience systematic barriers to your development as an artist? Do you crave a network of peers and exchange? Does the idea of being part of an artist-community excite you?

Through Wortelen/Rooting, Flanders Arts Institute helps build a learning network for makers at the beginning of their professional careers. A learning network is a group of people who meet regularly to share knowledge and experiences, engage in cross-fertilisation and grow together. Through this learning network and the information that comes out of it, we hope to offer more targeted help in the sector in the future, and to learn what is important to the artists of tomorrow.

The content of the sessions will largely depend on your needs. Flanders Arts Institute initiates and facilitates a fruitful open space, in which we provide organisational and production support. The form of this (workshops, lectures, show or share sessions, …) depends on the participants.

For who?

  • You work proactively, are interested in collaboration and want to help shape this learning network.
  • You are active in the visual arts, performing arts and/or classical music.
  • You are at the start of your professional career – regardless of age. As a guideline, we apply a term of maximum 5 years active in the field, but feel free to motivate why you need this.
  • You are not studying (anymore). Whether or not you have enjoyed an art education is not important.
  • You experience higher social barriers than other artists to starting your career, due to systematic oppression and/or financial barriers.
  • Have you never heard of Flanders Arts Institute or never contacted us? No problem, let that be an additional invitation to participate.

Because of their underrepresentation in the arts, we want to encourage everyone of colour, women, people with disabilities or neurodivergence, individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community and individuals experiencing financial barriers to participate.

When?

You are willing to commit to six meetings on the following dates:

  • November 27: introductions and orientation;
  • January 20: substantive session;
  • February 24: substantive session;
  • March 24: substantive session;
  • April 28: substantive session;
  • May 12: reflection and farewell drink.

What does Flanders Arts Institute offer?

  • Flanders Arts Institute takes on the organisation of these moments and provides the opportunity to invite external experts.
  • We offer you a fee per session via sliding scale*: 100€ – 150€ – 200€ (excluding VAT) + transport costs.
  • Flanders Arts Institute takes report and gets to work with what grows from the network.

*Via sliding scale we give you the option to choose your remuneration. We ask you to take into account your current income and socio-economic status. Are you financially secure? Then consider choosing a lower remuneration. This way, it is possible for us to give a higher remuneration to people who are in a financially difficult situation.

How to participate?

Submissions can be made until October 23 via the form below. We ask you to send us a document (PDF) of max one A4, or a video or audio file of max five minutes with the answer to the following questions:

  • Briefly introduce yourself: what trajectory have you already taken in the arts?
  • What themes or topics would you like to address within this project?
  • Why are you interested in this project?
  • What are your expectations from the learning network and from Flanders Arts Institute?

Register here

To register, we ask you to create an account on our website and choose a password. With your own account, you can always update your details and/or unsubscribe from the event. If you want to register for another event, you obviously do not need to make this again. Having problems creating an account? Then send an e-mail to sofia@kunsten.be.

In the week of November 4, we will let you know if you have been selected.

How do we make a selection?

  • We go through all submissions with four colleagues from Flanders Arts Institute.
  • We are aiming for a group of about ten people.
  • We see if your motivation and expectations match with what Flanders Arts Institute can offer within this learning network.
  • We try to put together a dynamic and varied group with attention to different disciplines, ages and underrepresented groups.

Accessibility

Flanders Arts Institute wants to take your needs into account. Do you have specific transport needs, a need for a Flemish Sign Language interpreter, or is there something else we can help you with? Let us know via the access rider (the accessibility document) that you will be sent when you are selected.

We always try to have the sessions take place physically, but are flexible in choosing a location. If physical attendance is not possible, you can participate online.
