Everyone wants a workplace where you can rehearse and create in peace. Space is not easy to find. That doesn’t mean you can’t get started. In the beginning you have to make do, but you always make room for art.
There are fantastic organisations that accommodate artists. They all have their own approach, so it depends on what you’re looking for. For example, one institution will only provide infrastructure, while the other will also offer guidance. People usually talk about rehearsal rooms, studios, workplaces and residencies. The boundary between these categories is not always very clear. It’s best to inform yourself well about the venue in question so that you know what to expect. Please note: in some cases a financial contribution is requested, in other cases you will be compensated.
Studios and rehearsal rooms provide specialised space to work independently. You can rent square meters for an hour or for longer periods. Usually you have to pay for this.
Workplaces provide specialised space and equipment to work, usually with supervision. The emphasis here is on the production process. There are specific workplaces for e.g. sound art, textile or woodworking… with the necessary technology in-house. Workplaces are art labs, so to speak, where research is also done into the creative process. Some workplaces may offer residencies.
Residencies provide a place for artists, usually for a specific period of time, to develop further substantively. ‘Artists-in-residence’ temporarily live on site and usually also follow a residency programme. The aim is to gain insight into one’s own practice. They are guided in their artistic development. Through the residency they can expand their knowledge and network in the arts field.
If you’re looking for a location with specific facilities, there are several options:
1. You can look for a residency:
Our site contains useful information for residencies in Flanders and Brussels.
There are also links and explanation about residencies abroad.
You often have to apply for these and there is a selection process. This sometimes takes the form of calls or contests. View our overview of calls.
Even more? Be sure to also check out our overview of residencies and workplaces, and information about residency grants.
2. There are organisations that make workplaces available to starters.
Such places are highly sought after. There are places that specialise in starters, others don’t. It’s best to find this out in advance. Check our list, and don’t forget that there undoubtedly are more initiatives at local level.
3. Be sure to visit municipal services or those of the province.
Perhaps there are vacant buildings that can be used for something. The city is often open to a cultural project that involves the neighbourhood, in which case it is best to be alert for processes of gentrification. Maybe this is something you can take on as a collective with other artists.
4. There are organisations that are engaged in the temporary use of vacant buildings. Contact Entrakt and Toestand for this.
