Part of professionalising is having a plan. But that is precisely the crux of the problem: a career in the arts is difficult to map out. And a plan is not: start, struggle for a few years, then hopefully breakthrough to success. Or give up after a few years.
A lot depends on the opportunities that come your way, that’s true. But opportunities also stem from creative thinking, courage, strategy, contacts and luck. You can work on some of those things.
Professionalisation is a process. It has to do with converting artistic DNA into the contours of a professional identity, including an implementation plan. That plan may be flexible and change over time. The bottom line is that you help yourself make choices that guide you in the direction you want to go.
We’ll explain how to do that in the following sections. If you get stuck somewhere, don’t worry. Flanders Arts Institute and many other organisations can think along with you. Many artists encounter the same obstacles, and we know their stories. Often they are willing to share them with you as well.
